{April A-Z Challenge} The letter C

Chantellinis

C is for … Cocktails

My 1st experience of a cocktail was a strawberry daiquiri - a mixture of crushed ice and delicious strawberries. The alcohol made me feel light-headed and relaxed. Best of all, it was topped with a whole strawberry.

When I was earning my own money, it was fun for the friends to get together over brightly coloured drinks and regale each other with stories of disastrous dates or exciting escapades.

1 night I confessed my desire to write an anonymous book about dating and stalkers. I even conceptualised the cover and the title. My anonymous blog was borne from a night of cocktails and a few years later here I am; Drinking cocktails and making memories.

Allow me to share the recipe of one of my very favourite cocktails - called a Chantellini - because it was concocted in my kitchen 1 night after many (many) taste-testing sessions.

You will need:

For 1 drink:
A martini glass - dip the rim in apple flavoured jelly powder
An apple slice dipped in some liquor to prevent discolouration - slit just enough to garnish the glass
Half a shot of Vodka
One shot of Apple Sourz (Tang Apple)
Fill up with Appletiser (or 100% sparkling apple juice)

Enjoy!

{April A-Z Challenge} The letter B

B is for … Baby

Dear 6 month old self

Sitting on your blanket right at that moment, do you have idea how much love you are surrounded with?

Do you know the direction your life is going to take?

Your mom, dad and maternal grandparents are standing behind that camera lens watching as you coo and smile prettily for them as their hearts are exploding with love.

Will you live up to their expectations and make them proud?

Let me tell you about the life you will lead … What will happen as you grow from being an innocent baby into the woman you are today:

Your mom has a white cat named Stevie. She has had her before your mom and dad even knew each other and your mom said that Stevie was her 1st child. (All animal lovers will understand this)

Stevie is your watch-guard. She will teach you that cats are elusive and will taunt you by sitting just out of your reach flicking her tail at you.

However, Stevie will always be near you. She will call your mom when you wake up or cry and she will love you right up to the day she is killed by dogs. You will see your mom crying uncontrollably and not be able to do a thing to console her.

When you turn 2, an SPCA rescue dog named Mindy will become a part of the family. Mindy will show you that animals are God’s perfect creation. They are kind and loving. Even when you ride her like a pony, she will let you, because she knows that later on, you will give her a lick of your ice-cream cone or a chew on your stick of biltong (similar to jerky)

And one day when you are 17, you will come home from school and your dad will come home from work and she will wag her tail one more time, look at each of you and pass away quietly. She is the last dog you will love that much because in your mind she is irreplaceable.

Your brother is born when you are 3 and he is a very sweet-natured little boy with a gentle heart and sweet smile. He is so much like your dad.

He will will make you realise that sometimes you can be selfish but you do nothing about it, Only later will you learn that the responsibilities of being a big sister are not to be taken lightly.

As you grow up, you play trucks in the sand and run around the field with the bulls and play with the goslings. You have lots of silkworms, and every day you go outside to pick mulberry leaves to feed them.

He lets you give him the blue Monopoly money ($5) in exchange for the pretty pink Monopoly money ($50) without once considering that you may be taking advantage, because you are his big sister and he loves you.

You will watch Top Secret a hundred times and never get bored and after Mac Gyver is finished, you will go to his room and concoct a plan involving lots of string; much to the dismay of your mother. When you come up with the silly idea of making candles by melting wax crayons in a glass bottle, he gamely follows your lead.

All these experiences will teach you valuable lessons. You will learn about laughter, kindness and the value of unconditional love.

Your dad will teach you that hard work will keep you honest. He will teach you never to give up no matter how difficult life may become.

He will give you everything he has just to see you smile, like an ice-cream cone on a Sunday afternoon or a family holiday that took forever to save for so that you can all see the ocean.

Your mom will teach you to have a sense of humour and to not let bad-intentioned people affect your sense of self-worth.

She will try to help you complete your knitting assignment but end up dropping stitches instead! She will walk the streets with you for hours to raise money for your debutante year at school.

Your grandmother will teach you not to be wasteful because she came from a time where the depression meant true poverty.

When you are run over by a car and almost lose your thumb, she will entertain you for hours playing Rummy and bring you coffee in bed and grated apples when the medication makes you sick.

Your grandfather will guide you and teach you to work with your hands. You will learn that life is about more than television.

When you want him to smile, you will make him pancakes or flapjacks and he will tell you it is the best food he has ever had.

When he breaks his ankle, you sit with him on the patio and draw colourful patterns on his cast.

Appreciate all those moments.

All too suddenly, your grandparents will be taken from you and you will have wished that you had worried less about boys, being locked up in your room listening to music and talking on the phone to your friends.

You will yearn to hear your grandfather’s war stories and your gran’s stories about having to leave school to support her family and never learning to swim or realise her dream of becoming a tap-dancer.

You will wish that you had played more games with your brother (like the time he offered to play Barbies just so that you would spend time with him) instead of shouting at him to leave your room. Before you know it, he grows up and goes through a difficult phase that affects your entire family. Perhaps you should have encouraged him to have more confidence instead of hearing him cry in his room and thinking he was a baby?

Would his life have taken a different path of you had been a better big sister?

Never fear little one.

You are the person you were meant to become. You are who you are because your family always believed in you and have always loved you.

Never forget that. Remember to be the best person you can be. That is the best gift you will ever give them. (And try not to be too selfish please!)

{April A-Z Challenge} The Letter A

I am really excited to challenge myself to a blogpost every day! eek!

Let's kick it off...

A is for... Audience

1D Concert - Wembley

I have wanted to see One Direction live for 4 years. I promised myself that if more tickets for their already sold out show (12 minutes for the 2014 world tour) ever became available again, I would do whatever I could to get 2 tickets.

I had 20 internet windows open for various ticket suppliers in the UK and I refreshed screens like a mad scientist trying to bring Frankenstein to life.

I secured my 2 tickets and I must admit, I almost cried.

This photo is taken of the audience as we were waiting for the boys. I can remember pausing, just to be in the moment, I inhaled deeply as I listened to the excited voices around me & felt the bodies pushing up against me as we all jostled for a few more steps closer to the stage...

This is what I had dreamed about - this is what happens when you fearlessly follow your dreams.

10 Things You Didn’t Know Your Microwave Could Do

I am not the most domestic person out there, so when find these interesting tidbits, I like to give them a share in case you, like myself, are undomesticated.
It turns out - the microwave can be used for so much more than re-heating pizza or heating milk for cereal - who knew!?

Give Your Plants a Boost
Sterilize soil for growing seedlings by heating it up in the microwave first. Colorado State University horticulturist Laura Pottorff suggests filling plastic containers with a thin layer of soil and microwaving them for 90 seconds per kilogram.

Save That Stamp
You can remove a stamp from an envelope by putting a drop of water of it and then microwaving it for 10-15 seconds.

Disinfect Sponges
According to Good Housekeeping, microwaving a sponge can kill 99.9% of most household germs (and around 99.8% of E. coli and salmonella). Try it yourself: Saturate your sponges with water and zap them in the microwave for 60 seconds.

Make Your Own Heating Pad for Sore Muscles
Cut the foot off an old tube sock and sew the end together. Fill it with rice and then sew the top closed. Now you’ve got an inexpensive heating pad you can use over and over. Take your pad to the next level by adding a few drops of lavender to the rice.

Save Your Stale Bread
If that two-day-old bagel is getting a little hard to chew, then wrap it (or any bread) in a moist paper towel and zap it in the microwave for 20 seconds. The moisture from the towel will soak into your bagel.

Unstick Your Brown Sugar Clumps
The paper towel trick can work in reverse when your brown sugar has gotten all stuck together. Moisten a paper towel, wad it up, and put it in the box with your sugar. Close everything up and microwave it for 25 seconds. The moisture from the towel with transfer into the sugar.

Related tricks: Zap stale chips for 10 seconds to give them their crunch back, or microwave fresh herbs for two minutes to get the dried variety.

Bake a Cake Without the Wait
Not into baking? You can make a single-serving cake in your microwave in just 5 minutes using ingredients you probably already have at home. Check out this video from Instructables for a rundown.

Peel Garlic Without the Pain
Peeling the skin off garlic is a chore that demands good fingernails and a lot of patience. It doesn’t have to be this way. Microwave bulbs for 15 seconds and they’ll come off much more easily. Cornell University assistant professor Gavin Sacks told NPR that the effect is probably related to water in the garlic steaming while it’s being zapped. That steam breaks down the bond between the clove and the skin.

Zap Your Citrus
Before juicing an orange or lemon, microwave the uncut fruit for 10-15 seconds. The microwave will make it easier to juice and help you get every drop.

DIY Toasted Nuts
Put some nuts in a microwave-safe bowl, add a little oil, and microwave them in one-minute increments, stirring after each. Cooking time will vary depending on the type and amount of nuts you’re using, but expect it to take around five minutes. The trick also works for foods like pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

{Blogger Chit Chat} with Caley, Claudz & Chantelle - Part 3

This is the final installment of our #BloggerChitChat with Caley, Claudz and myself.

I hope you have enjoyed getting to know a bit more about your fellow bloggers.

Question 1:
Name your top 3 career choices, and why?

Caley:
Stay-at-home-mom – this may not be seen as a career choose but it is a difficult job that I absolutely love, it allows quality time with my children and flexible time while they are at school.

Pre-school owner/headmistress – I have a dream of opening and running my own playgroup one day and it excites me to be able to manage this unique business and shaping little lives.

Party Planner – it is no secret that I love to plan and host parties – I love being creative and making little functions come to life for others to enjoy.

Claudz:
Food Stylist/Photographer – I would love to take photos of food. To style a shoot and create a visual story of the food.

Travel Writer/Food Explorer – I would love to travel to new and exciting places and write interesting articles about the destination. Different “Top 10” lists and secret food haunts in the city

Coffee Shop/Deli Owner – I always imagined living in a small town and owning a coffee shop/deli (with a friend or two around the corner who owns a business that compliments the deli). Friends would stop in on their way to collect kids, bachelors will pick up their evening meal and we’ll close for long weekends when everyone is out of town anyway. Put your feet on the couch, order a half/half cake (half chocolate, half carrot) and tell me your dreams.

Chantelle:
Wedding Photographer - I have shot a wedding once as a favour for a friend's sister and absolutely loved everything about it. Using the couple's natural emotion and capturing it's essence is what I enjoy, as well as finding interesting features of the location and using them is part of the challenge.

Puppy and Kitten babysitter - I don't think this job exists - but I would love to open up an animal pre-school where new fur-parents can drop their babies off while they are too young to be left alone. I will play with them, give them exercise and love, so that when they go home they are too tired to rip up curtains or furniture.

Professional Blogger - I have a dream of waking up every morning, making myself a cup of coffee and sitting down in front of my laptop to type up my blog post and sharing my latest news and photos with the Big Wide Web.
